The “little actors” are able to perform with great ability and confidence. They are 5 to 12 year olds and they are natural high achievers within the school compound. The scenes were filmed in Ghana in the local language (Twi) in September 2009. They speak Twi as well as English. Petals Education Centre have an opportunity for directors, producers and film makers  to work with the naturally talented school children of Ghana. Whether your wish is to get them to be into comedy/ action , you have the choice!!

The mission lasts from 2-4 weeks ( stay can be extended or reduced according to preferences).  If you are looking for tropical/bushy areas or drier places you will all find them in Nkawkaw.

The visionary

ME DAASE PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Eyeee me deeee!! (Proofread the twi, I am sure there are many mistakes)

When I approached them, I noticed that:

When you come home and you go and you are hungry they cook you trademark dish.
When at home, they spend about two or three hours washing the family’s clothes by hand.

When at home, they cook and serve you breakfast early in the morning before you wakeup.

When at home, they fetch the water so that you can be nice and clean for the day.

When at home, they are shrewd consultants advising you about your plans.

When at home, they take care of children so that they can have a proper education.

It is a shame that chores and activities are divided up in such an unbalanced way.

Why are they imputed to so many responsibilities, always seen as having secondary roles by the society and not recognized as pillars in the household?

This is an enigma that I wish to answer. Not you?

Most of my cousins might not realise how much I paid attention to those particular details. By the way, I wanted once to strangle Debrah when haggling got to an unreachable level of pettiness that made me lose a palatable deal

The CHEAP sculpture

We were walking near the National Art Centre in Accra and I was basically broke. It was my last day in Accra and I had to save enough money to eat on the same day.  I was looking for a typical African sculpture at a low price.  In Ghana, if you pay the price you are being offered, you can instantly tell yourself that you have been ripped off.

We then saw the hawker running towards us. He told us that he was desperately wanting to sell his sculpture. At first, I looked totally uninterested. He then said that he would sell the item at 20 cedis which was far lower than the 50 cedis I would have had to  pay for in the National Art Centre. I kept on walking away from him on the advice of my cousin. He kept stalking us telling us that he could bring it down to 10. That price caught my eye. I told him about my financial miseries so that he reduces the price further. He said that 5 cedis were fine. I started slowing down. Then my cousin said: “If you can make for 5, why not 2??” looking down on him. The seller rebuked him and ran away to look for other preys.  At first, I said to myself that I was better off like that. It is only after a few seconds that I realized that I missed out on a big deal.

Blackout

One night, the electrician came home to replace some faulty fuses. As Africans are well known for taking things easy, even the price is set in a diplomatic and consultative way. My cousin feigned to have a crush on the electrician to lower the price. When he came to be surrounded by my uncle and her, you could tell that the final decision to be made was done with discomfort once the wooing job was done.

I was at my auntie’s shop relaxing when I suddenly heard somebody shouting at a lady whilst in motion in a taxi, banging his door forcefully afterwards . I got to know that the taxi went past the lady by a few centimetres when she was in the middle of the road texting somebody. Furious, that passenger, instead of rolling down the window, opened the door asking her “Don’t you know that cars pass here?” Hilaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarious.

The informative video is only about 10 minutes. It is a video made for the future participants of the voluntary program that is due to take place in Nkawakaw in Summer 2011.
